Not so long ago ornament was crime and tattooed people were potential murderers. Take it easy, Mr. Loos. In an article for Huffington Post, Tom Mallory takes a critical look on the seeming comeback of ornament in architecture: from the psychedelic Agbar Tower of Jean Nouvel to the rooftop blue heavens of Didden Village by MVRDV, architecture is no longer afraid to be talkative and graphic. Ornamentality has its roots deep in history – think about the beautifully decorated walls and ceilings of palaces, churches and mosques – and the examples here prove that with the contemporary technology and aesthetics this former criminal can really contribute to the richness of the environments.
