From a practical point of view, metropolitan underground railway is one of those crucial inventions whose hypothetical non-existence, it would be safe to say without exaggeration, would make city life unbearable. The spaces born alongside the development of the prominent infrastructure, however, have an impact that far transcends their utilitarian importance and are also marked by great ambiguity: they are enclosed and at the same time open to the public perhaps more universally than any other public building; they are a negative space of transit movement with all the social characteristics of a positive gathering space. It is a legal underworld whose manifestations both underground and over it will always be a challenge to city authority and space designers alike and this collection is an attempt to gather together the most inspirational answers to this call.
