Woolwich Squares

The Woolwich Squares will be redeveloped as “Garden & Ballroom”. General Gordon Square will remain a daytime garden, however one that can be transformed for other uses. The design opens up the Square providing wide terraces of grass and broad diagonal paths across its centre. The landscape and planting has associations with the countryside and orchards that surrounded Woolwich until the 19th Century. A water scrim will provide a safe and engaging place for children to play. The lighting scheme in the evening will be soft and atmospheric, with the surrounding trees and buildings reflecting in the water. Beresford Square is the meeting point between the town centre and Royal Arsenal and will continue to house Woolwich’s historic Royal Charter market. The design reintroduces a high pavement along the western side of the Square with catenary lighting recalling memories of the tramlines that once crossed the Square. The Royal Arsenal Gatehouse will provide a stunning backdrop for events once the market has vacated the space, recalling an era when Beresford Square was the social heart of Woolwich.
