Woo Residence, Tai Hang Road Hong Kong Perched on a sloping site, a building condition very common in Hong Kong, this six-storey private residence will stand as a model of creativity and nestled in the heavily built environment of the Tai Hang residential district. The project went through several rounds of studies to ensure the final design would maintain the client’s desired structure and privacy for the family members; this was resolved by sectioning or zoning the building to provide secluded spaces to the different house occupants, including visiting friends and relatives. Located on a narrow and restricted site bound by slopes on three sides, a freestanding design was chosen to allow the block to sit proud of its surroundings. Resting on columns, the building sits over a podium with a swimming pool and landscaped garden for the enjoyment of the family. The architectural language responds to the urban context, with a formal approach that gives the building an enhanced sense of distinction. The façade structure is strictly regulated to 1.5 metre modules; the main staircase was designed sculpturally as a feature component that connects each section of the building while giving a physical understanding of the main sections of the house, dividing the frontage neatly in three portions. The three sections of the stairs facade present a curvaceous glass configuration in contrast to the uniform lines of the main façade. This stark contrast creates a strong architectural statement that represents the family’s strong interest in art and design as an integral part of their lifestyle. The building will be clad in natural anodized aluminum panels with a special light bronze color finish; double glazed IGU with low-E coated low iron glass units will be used to maximize transparency. Where increased privacy is required, timber strips will be incorporated to the glazing units to diffuse light and obscure visibility.
