Virginia Beach Convention CenterEdit profile
The Virginia Beach Convention Center serves as the anchor for the revitalization of the City’s Old Beach District. The new building triples the size of the old pavilion, making it one of the largest convention centers on the U.S. eastern seaboard. Design inspiration came from important elements of the region’s past, present and future. The building’s most notable features include a soaring 150-foot tall tower of glass and steel and an elegant lobby façade. The wall’s shape and scale is a nod to the city’s lighthouse, the billowing sails of colonial ships and the awe-inspiring supersonic jets that regularly grace the skies overhead. Inside, wood-clad meeting rooms recall the sun-warmed decks of a nineteenth-century schooner. These references to the region’s history and natural environment are offset by numerous technological innovations that are featured in the building. A revolutionary cellular phone enhancement system will enable conference participants to locate each other and navigate the immense exhibition halls easily and efficiently. The main ballroom’s custom lighting system allows for infinite changes in the room’s appearance through the use of a palette of over 17 million colors. A 180-foot long video display in the building’s lobby is the first of its size in the United States and enables the presentation of video and art installations. The success of the new convention center has already improved visibility for the City. The increased size and space and the premier amenities of the facility has attracted new meetings and conventions, increasing visitation. The building’s success has spurred additional economic growth in the region. The project has become a new symbol for the community of Virginia Beach and a true cornerstone in the City’s revitalization.
