History
Victoria Park station opened in 1888 as Collingwood (not to be confused with the present Collingwood Station). Between 1888 and 1901 it was the terminus of the Collingwood to Heidelberg railway line. Until a direct connection with the Melbourne Central Business District was made in 1901 between Princes Bridge and Collingwood, the only connection to the city centre was via the Inner Circle. A former goods yard is adjacent to platform 1, whilst a stabling siding is situated at down end of the station. In 1981 the station buildings were reconstructed. Victoria Park was once a busy station as it was the closest station to McHale Stadium, former home of the Collingwood Football Club. Large numbers of people used Victoria Park station to travel to and from matches played at the stadium. In 1999 Collingwood moved all its home games from Victoria Park to the Melbourne Cricket Ground, thus lowering station patronage considerably.
