Architecture is both urban element and background. Buildings make places and places create urban landscape. Architectural space is the starting point for urban space. The Gangnam-daero Street is one of the main axes of Seoul: it is a big branch that shapes the city lattice. The urban matrix consisting of latitude and longitude meet. Urban energy is gathered at the point. Not only the physical energy concentrating and spreading, but also the symbolic energy of the coordinates of urban space is concentrated at that point. Urbanhive stands at the corner of the point. As for a high-storied building with repeated typical floors, structure is the most important element. Structure if the frame for space. Common sense says that the frame is first created and added with flesh and cloths later. Common sense is the right answer in most cases, but it is often stereotyped. If clothes are first created and the frame is made later in a reversed way, the essence of architecture is changed. I did not attempt to create a form out of distortion and fabrication. I wanted to make a simple, clear, and pure space. If the inside is turned into the outside, the structure can be exposed. Completion of the structure is completion of space. Space is the ultimate goal of architecture. I decided to expose the structure because I wanted to emphasize the oneness of space and form. Concrete poured into the cast and hardened is fully plastic. If the structure designed to support space is exposed, the inside becomes free space, not restricted by structure. Free means natural. Naturalness is a means of overcoming uniformity, disguised as rationality. At issue is how to link the weight and texture of the concrete to the urban context. The concrete wall should be soft, not hard, so we made the concrete wall light and bright, not dark or dull. The concrete wall was used for supporting the load, not for blocking things. If a concrete mass has holes, its weight will be reduced. The holes were key to architectural expression. However, how to look at the holes was more important than what the holes themselves looked like. According to the size and shape of the holes, the outside look of the building can be outstanding or common. The openwork circular holes are a filter that maintains both solid and void conditions. The transparent glass screen, separated from structural holes, is designed to maintain the internal conditions, not to serve as a window. How architecture is linked to a city means how architecture contacts with people. The inside and outside are not separated. They are one. We just created an open empty space, not an entrance hall or a lobby. The exit of each floor is directly connected to an urban road. This white, punched box at the corner of the Gangnam-daero Street is open and empty. Monolithic simplicity catches the floating city for a moment. Others might think that the combination of holes is designed to serve as an object. However, we used the holes to create changes in distant and close-range views. The larger view on the proposed design is that the urban tension is removed through use of materials: a softness that does away with hardness, and a lightness that removes the heaviness of the concrete. The narrower view is that the various expressions formed by the round details remove the simplicity of the city landscape at the site.
