New construction and reconstruction of the University of Applied Science Wels

 

Eu-wide competition – 1 prize

 

Urban context

The L-shaped polytechnic, which is situated close to the city centre of Wels, integrates into the surrounding with a clear and neat form. It closes the edge of the city space. The tract oriented towards the yard is one storey lower than the tract towards road in order to adapt to the mansion structure of the neighbourhood.

 

Architectural appearance

The building is characterised by a clear concept, transparency and high spatial quality. A generous hall represents the communicative core of the polytechnic, bars and bridges connect the two opposed sides. The open space experience is transported by upper light into the adjacent areas. This creats a bright and pleasant ambience.

 

Modern polytechnic
The new construction is dimensioned for 1200 students and 100 employees. The key course element of this location lies on Engineering and Environmental Sciences.
Offered courses are: Mechatronics and Business management, Automated Engineering, Bio- and Environmental Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Innovation and Product Management, Materials and Processing Technology, Ecological Energy Engineering, Product Design and Technical Communication, Process Engineering and Production

 

Building concept

Beside the numerous lecture-rooms, seminar rooms, laboratories and workshops the room program offers many special areas - generous auditoriums with rising seating rows, a representation room at the lateral corner of the roadside of the building, the library, the two stories CIM laboratory as well as the refectory on the ground level, which through generous glass fronts enables a wide view from Stelzhamerstrasse up to the yard.

 

Low energy building

The building cover is of outstanding compactness. Computations from building physics prove that it is a low-energy building. The air conditioning consists of controlled ventilation, which flows through a terrestrial collector into the training rooms. There it emits as source flow at the ground to avoid draft.

 

Double skin facade

For the facade we developed a double skin system. The outer skin consists of shifted mounted glass slabs. Between them small vertical slots allow air- but no sound transmission. This way we enable undisturbed working with open windows. In addition to that, the buffer zone reduces the heating costs.
