University Hospitals Ahuja Medical CenterEdit profile
The first-phase, 144-bed, acute-care hospital and integrated medical office building located along a freeway in a suburb of Cleveland, is designed to connect with the community and its needs - from the exterior aesthetic reflecting the developing community surrounding it to the functional “community of care” promoting the welfare of both patients and staff.
The seven-story, curved patient tower is positioned to maximize the building’s external visibility from the freeway and internal views to the adjoining wetlands and maintain those views in succeeding phases. Within the nursing unit, the curved plan enhances patient care and staff efficiency by minimizing staff travel, improving circulation of supplies, minimizing transport of patients and maximizing opportunities for access to daylight and views. The terra cotta-clad exterior reinterprets the materiality of the industrial brick buildings of the region in a new and contemporary way.
The planned three-phase medical campus is designed to function efficiently in its initial phase while providing a chassis for incremental growth into a 600-bed facility. The strategy for growth allows the public and service spines to expand incrementally, with minimal disruption, as the needs of the facility evolve.
