The new workshop facilities at Clarkson were purpose-built to address the skills shortage of pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship training in the areas of Building and Construction, Metals/Light Manufacturing and Electrical. The project is focussed upon supplying qualified tradespersons to support the booming housing and mining industries. Students are trained in both specific trade areas and in the additional skills of enterprise and employability skills via additional evening/weekend workshops to build capacity for self-employment via subcontracting and owner business options. Students are drawn from areas north of Perth, including existing secondary high school students from local schools, including Clarkson Community High School, Mindarie Senior College and Wanneroo Senior High School. These secondary enrolled students primarily engage in School Apprenticeship Link programs and Vocational Education for School Students Pre-Apprenticeship programs creating pathways into apprenticeship training to address the skills shortages. Individuals who have left traditional schooling and mature aged apprentices are also attracted to ‘Trades North at Clarkson’, and are able to apply via the New Apprenticeship Centre. Student numbers at full delivery capacity are approximately 90 students per day over a 5 day week delivery (450), with additional numbers for short course options in the evening and weekends. The site is located in Clarkson on a portion of land adjoining the Clarkson Senior High School. It is bounded by Connolly Drive to the west, Walyunga Boulevard to the north, a drainage sump, single residential housing and Harmony Avenue to the south and Clarkson Senior High School to the east. The site is vegetated with natural bushland and is predominantly in a hollow below the adjoining roads and has a level change ranging from 4 - 10m with the adjoining school.
