the sanctuary
Sanctuary Site is a very Louisiana setting… lakefront on a small forest of cypress in a shallow lake with an adjacent pond. Upon approach, enter thru a decorative bamboo inspired aluminum gate, drive around the pond across the length of the house. The house is comprised of a yin and yang of materials… smooth and rough, contemporary and classic, shiny and dull. The house is clad in a long black brick, clear anodized aluminum columns and curtainwall, clear low-e insulated glazing panels, a special blend of EIFS surfacing with large horizontal reveals and wood. Roof is entirely custom, continuous arched metal roof panels (continuous segments – seamless strips) Entry progression… leading the visitor to the door is the predominant view of the suspended fireplace, visible thru the concrete and stacked slate archway, across granite slab bridge over the reflecting pool with aluminum columns rising out of the water Illuminated at night The granite slab bridge leads to the frameless glass front door with custom stainless handles. The entry is one end of the glass enclosed living room. The curtainwall is a custom 10` deep mullion system. Frameless glass front doors with custom stainless steel handles allow visibility of the living room and beyond. The placement of the suspended chimney creates a small entry vestibule while still being open to the living area. Peek thrus to the lake; from front to back to keep a dynamic experience. The view out the front door toward the pond shows the granite slab bridge to the concrete and stacked stone archway framing the pond sculpture. Fireplace with suspended, curved limestone clad chimney; custom cut stone; all stone was handpicked by the owner; ribbon flame fireplace set in a recessed bed of black river rock. The living / dining / office area have large arched linear glue lam beams on aluminum columns. Floating wood slats ceiling panels and two flanking vertical planes of limestone contrast with the curtainwall on the other sides. Kitchen is open to a large den and dining area with a custom cut stone/hand chiseled fireplace. Kitchen is equipped with state of the art appliances including a custom hood, built in espresso maker, refrigerator, refrigerator drawers, dishwashers, double ovens and range. A heavy duty custom steel blower exhaust system fully ventilates. Outdoor kitchen and den area complete with air conditioning and electronic phantom screens to close entire area, heavy duty blower / exhaust system over cooking area. Nanowalls, glass walls that completely retract to allow for a full, large opening, connects the den area to an outdoor kitchen and seating area. The fireplace is clad in stacked slate and the full kitchen is in front of a full wall of slanted and stacked Ann Sachs tiled stone. Adjacent to this kitchen and seating area is an elevated party deck of solid ipe wood with black slate bamboo planters around edge to offer a unique perch to enjoy the lake and the house. The planters have lighting for a soft nighttime atmosphere. A covered deck is below with an elevated lawn overlooking the lake. A firepit with bench seating breaks up the long edge of the lawn. This lawn offers a great view of the house in context with the trees and sky reflectiing in the glass lets the building be more a part of the landscape and context.
