“SUSPENDED FLOAT` Cycling bridge over the river Ybbs / City of Amstetten Lower AUSTRIA / EUROPE The river Ybbs is leading from the north Austrian mountains to the river Danube. The region called “Mostviertel` is quiet low populated, but on one hand well known for the apple juice (called “Most`) and on the other hand for the steel production through the last thousand years. The task was to span the river Ybbs with a bridge to make it possible to walk and cycle along the valley Mostviertel getting an impression about the nature and the culture developed over the last thousand of years. The site is in the middle of nowhere. It is a very quiet site in the mid of nature. The only technical element is a railway bridge in a short distance. In this situation the new bridge should make the quality of the place and the region valuable. Walking over a bridge usually always has to kind of motions. On one hand the save, relaxing and enjoying moments at the banks and on the other hand a kind of light, flying feeling by crossing over. The two widely visible iron “doors to the bridge` you can see by coming closer through the forest. They make the force visible and give the user safety. The “iron doors` – a connection to traditional formed material in the valley – tell the user, that there is something different is coming up. On the steel frames the cable is fixed. On this cable there are light weight ropes with a beam (like a “swing`) are fixed every fife meters. This “swings` are carrying the walking surface (like a SUSPENDED FLOAT) out of steel plates with concrete covering. For the handrail we used a separate cable, where is also fixed the net on both sides. For the people using the bridge should be able to feel the energy of the river and the force between of the water between the banks. To make the forces visible was our personal task on the project (see also “Siddhartha` written by Hermann Hesse). The bridge is free spanning over 276 feet, the whole bridge is 390 feet long and 10 feet wide. The steel frames are 42 feet high. The main cable has 0.23 feet in diameter. The beams are 0.6 feet high.
