Station Hyllie is the first station you reach when travelling by train from Copenhagen’s Kastrup airport and therefore acts as Malmö’s gateway to Copenhagen and further on to Europe. This is no traditional station building, instead we have worked with other elements. The large round roof, with a diameter of 45 m, is lit from below using uplights and hovers like a UFO above the station entrance. The round shape was chosen as an element that responds to the many different directions in the area. The roof is perforated by 52 round lantern lights that allow daylight to reach all the way down to the platforms, and thereby eliminating any sense of an underground station. Daylight and lines of sight have acted as important parameters for creating a safe environment for the travellers. The station is a regional and local train station with four tracks and two platforms. The lighting concept has been carried out by Bartenbach LichtLabor of Innsbruck. We have collaborated with the artist Kristina Matusch to create three artistic decorations on the site. The first one is glass rings around the bases of the columns that symbolises the archaeological excavations carried out on the site before construction. The second is cut out faces in the glass closest to the stairs down to the platforms that symbolises the people that inhabited the site throughout history. The third is a beam of light that wanders around the platform roof in one minute to show the transient nature of time.
