Shirakawa City LibraryEdit profile
This is a 2006 competition proposal (completed in 2011).
The library is located in the immediate vicinity of Shirakawa Railway Station and also at the end of the Komine area of the castle which is a symbol of the city. The sensitivity to the landscape and the pitched roof of the castle have become a starting point for the design. The interior reconciles curved ceilings and skylights with clean-cut and functional plans; directed changes in the internal space by means of indirect lighting happen at each corner.
Set in a way that opens it to the castle region the buildings stands aware of the context at all times - the librarians feel the changes in time and seasons. The building is aiming to become a forum for activities as open to the public as it is open to the landscape.
