Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013

Edit profile

The 2013 Serpentine Gallery summer pavilion rested lightly on the lawn outside the gallery, a steel tube construction that emerged from our workshops in large segments using a total of 8km of steel tubing, cut into 27,000 lengths. Welded first into cubed units of 400 x 400mm and 800 x 800mm and then into 55 larger sections, the pavilion was then assembled on site to form the cloud-like structure. Described by Fujimoto as a 'frame cloud' and a 'polycarbonate cloud', the pavilion's density appears to change according to viewpoint, weather and time of day - some areas appear opaque and some almost transparent, while visitors on upper platforms appear to float within the structure itself.
