One of the greatest challenges implicit in the brief for the new Alex was that of integrating the proposed (15,500m2) paediatric hospital, used since its foundation to being physically and organisationally independent, within the Royal Sussex County site, a congested medical campus and adult environment on the other side of Brighton. A number of more explicit challenges were also set down in the Trust’s clinical brief, issued to competitors in October 2002 in the first stage of the PFI contest. Primary amongst these was the need to address a new model of paediatric care, which placed great emphasis on a child and family-centred approach. This had direct implications for space standards in terms of catering for large groups of relatives and the aspiration to provide overnight accommodation for parents by every patient bedside. For us, though, the underlying challenge was to make the architecture child-friendly and welcoming and appealing to the broad age range (from 1 to 19 years) without it being
