Syrian Druze from the Golan Heights are permitted to cross one way through the passage to study, work and live in the rest of Syria. Only those who receive special permission are allowed to cross the border and come back for the Habil pilgrimage.
In recent years, the crossing has also been used for the export of Druze-grown apples to the rest of Syria, under the auspices of the Red Cross.
