Primary School, Sesvetska Sopnica
PRIMARY SCHOOL "SESVETSKA SOPNICA" The primary school building is constructed on the plot where a smaller old school had stood. The old school building stood in the middle of the plot, while external school playground stood on the north part of the plot which had to be preserved, so the new school could have been built on the only remaining free area, along the souhtwestern edge of the plot, near the stream. The old school building was demolished after the new one had been built. A school park was arranged on the place of the old school building, which was turned into a green area in front of the new building. The idea of the architectural design of the new school was based on combination of two roof slopes in which the whole body of the building was divided, which was adjusted to the format of the suburburban environment. The organization of the school premises was laid out along two axes: the wing with classrooms oriented towards the school park and the stream, and the premises for other school purposes which are connected to the gym with the adjoining premises. A rhytmical row of classrooms is lighted from two sides and visually connected to the areas of green between the classrooms. The classrooms are organized in two rows, with glass walls facing the inner hall, which ensure plenty of sun light, which unifies all these premises. All the classrooms on the groundfloor are similar to row houses and have exits onto the walkway. The walkway is made of coloured yellow asphalt, which stretches between the two entrances to the school plot: entrance from the street in the west and the entrance from the bridge in the east over the stream. A speed track is situated on the part of the walkway leading from the street to the main entrance, and near the pedestrian entrance on the plot a new school square was arranged, covered in wooden tiles. At the intersection of the two axes, in the central part along the main entrance, there is a multifunctional space where visual interaction between the school canteen, library and gym is achieved. The multifunctional space is directly connected to the external area of the school playground. The whole facade is made in two kinds of material: glass and sheet metal roof slopes, which is also continued on the part of facade. The used stripes of "kalzip" sheet metal influenced the modularity of the whole building. All these parts of building are multiples of width of the 40 centimeters wide sheet metal stripes. Glass panes are made of mirrored glass which protect the premises from the sun, and reflect the green of the school park, which dematerializes the body of the school building.
