Performing Arts Centre, Alleyn's SchoolEdit profile
In 2003 van Heyningen and Haward was appointed by the school’s governors to design a new performing arts and teaching centre as part of a masterplan for the school. The Edward Alleyn Building is built over 3 levels, with the Michael Croft Theatre extending up to a fourth level. The theatre can seat up to 350 and is a flexible space, designed with excellent acoustic qualities and sightlines to the stage. Other facilities include a 100 seat lecture theatre and a studio for the National Youth Theatre. A double quad between the new and existing school buildings was designed to have fundamental benefits for the whole school community, both physically and socially. The two sections of the quad have differing atmospheres; one quiet and contemplative, the other dynamic and sporting. The building also provides a new terrace opening off the foyer, which can be used to enjoy views over the playing fields.
