Olympic Substation
The Primary Electrical Substation will supply electricity to the Olympic Park during the Games and for future legacy developments. There was a clear emphasis on high quality architectural and structural design. The building acknowledges the Victorian tradition of high quality infrastructure buildings and sets a theme of solidity and permanence for a new family of infrastructure in the Olympic Park as well as being inherently low maintenance. Sustainability was at the heart of the plans and the building is also helping to ensure that London 2012 is a truly sustainable Games. The construction reused crushed materials from the demolition of the former Kings Yard buildings in the Olympic Park. The building also includes a ‘brown roof’, which involves crushed materials laid down on a flat roof, which allows species to colonise naturally. This roof will help enhance the ecological value and biodiversity of the Olympic Parksite by attracting local wildlife.
