Newmarket station opened on November 1, 1860 as part of the private Melbourne and Essendon Railway Company line to Essendon. The station closed with the line in 1864 until it was reopened in 1871 under government ownership. A permanent station building was first constructed in 1886. The present buildings were built in 1925. The bridge at Racecourse Road is the third on the site. Interlocking and a signal box for the Racecourse line junction were brought into use in 1880, becoming remotely controlled from Kensington in 1969. The station was used during construction of CityLink in 1997-1998 to shuttle passengers to and from Flemington Bridge station (on the Upfield line). This was because Macaulay station was closed, and trains did not run between Flemington Bridge and North Melbourne. This was necessary to allow the construction of raised roads linking the West Gate Freeway with the Tullamarine Freeway for the CityLink project. This increased the journey time for the Upfield line by 10”“20 minutes.
