New Design for the Market Square | Mittersill

NEW DESIGN FOR THE MARKET SQUARE | MITTERSILL | AUSTRIA ABSTRACT The Hohe Tauern National Park is a wild, primeval mountain area and a rural landscape gently cultivated over the centuries by mountain farmers. Embedded in this unique nature the town of Mittersill has developed as a main settlement. We enter the main square - the heart of Mittersill - and we discover a collection of atmospheric images, different views, which interact with the new surface of the square. This creates an entity. The place is perceived as a united space. The square is covered with an ornament, a pattern which is adapted to the scale of the surrounded space. This floral pattern reflects by its stylization the relevance of the site as the centre of this exceptional landscape. The pavement unfolds freely from sidewalks and is made of rolled coloured asphalt surfacing with additions of local natural stone gravel. Entrances and staircases to the existing buildings are naturally integrated in the new surface. The federal road is slightly elevated with a tactile height of 3 centimetres and thus assures the leading function for the motorised individual traffic. The concept is based on a barrier-free design, which guarantees a completely multifunctional use of the space.
