Museum De Fundatie in Zwolle

At the Award Show of the Dutch Design Week last Saturday, Museum De Fundatie was awarded the prestigious Dutch Design Award 2013 in the Spatial Exterior category.

The eye catching extension of the 19th century building of Museum De Fundatie in Zwolle is designed by Bierman Henket architecten. The renovated museum was opened on 31 May 2013 by princess Beatrix. Since that moment the museum received more than 100.000 visitors.

The ellipsoidal volume on top of the existing buildingis tiled with 55.000 blue-white glazed ceramic elements, produced by Koninklijke Tichelaar in Makkum. The tactile surface of the volume makes the extension almost dissolve in the sky above the city. Bierman Henket architecten and Koninklijke Tichelaar are convinced that traditional materials and contemporary architecture are going well together.

The jury highly appreciated the collaboration between the factory (the oldest in the Netherlands) and the architect: "the history of Koninklijke Tichelaar is reflected in the design, in a way that repositions the building without dominating it. The apparent contradiction between classic and futuristic is balanced and gives the building an impressive appearance."

The exhibition of the finalists of the Dutch Design Award is open until 27 October te at Gebouw Gerard in the  Stijp-S quarter in Eindhoven.
