The light that flooded the once dark, awkward space after the architects installed a dramatic skylight
spanning the ceiling and extending four feet above the roofline — and the resulting transparency and sense
of infinity — spoke to the cinematographer in Mr. Miranda. So he decided to take another step: redoing the
master bathroom, which was accessible only through a walk-in closet.
The architects removed the closet, increasing the size of the bathroom, and replaced most of one wall with a
sliding glass door, so that bathing could become an outdoor activity. (The house is on a heavily wooded site,
surrounded by oak, cypress, eucalyptus and citrus trees, and the long stairway from the street discourages
uninvited guests, allowing the family to maintain its privacy.)
