Mind Zone, Millenium Dome

The "Mind Zone" is one of fourteen individual exhibition spaces within the Millennium Dome. Comprising a unique undertaking, ZHA designed both the curatorial aspects and the architectural scheme. The design engages the complex subject matter of the Mind, in a structure of three overlapping sections, unfolding to create a continuous surface that can be floor wall or soffit and that allows for a fluid journey through the space. The content of the exhibit and the exhibit structure, are presented and experienced as a single idea; the exhibit structure of folding continuous surfaces is seen as a host, the physical presence on which and within which the content can be located. As a narrative strategy, the three elements complement the primary mental functions; 'input', 'process', and 'output' represented variously through perspectival and visual distortion, explanatory exhibits, sculpture, computers, audiovisual installations and interactive elements. The design strategy avoids being overtly pedagogical and is rather interactive and thought provoking. It was because of this underlying premise that artists were proposed as the main exhibitors. Structurally the exhibit integrates the content with the usage of evolutionary materials. Its materiality is focused on the synthetic, the mind made materials of the present. The brief to create a continuous floor / wall / soffit has produced a unique lightweight transparent panel made from glass fibre skins with an aluminium honeycomb structure. Similarly the base steel structure is layered with translucent materials, which seek to create an ephemeral temporal quality befitting an exhibition with a design life of one year. The "Mind Zone" is one of fourteen individual exhibition spaces within the Millennium Dome.
