The project is part of the Council's wider "Gateway" infrastructural improvements to junction 14 of the M1, including a new park and ride facility.
One of the main principles informing the design is the use of Milton Keynes infrastructural grid system. The grid is set at a 35 degree angle to North and has been used to strike a datum line for the central spine of the building. This spine connects the building's two main entrances and is highlighted by a glazed roof light running the length of the building. The roof light then continues externally through the canopy covering the coach bays.
The scale of the building is designed to generate a sense of arrival for all passengers travelling to Milton Keynes by embracing arrival and departure with a customer centric design.
