Marnix Sports Centre
Swimming Pool and Sports Centre het Marnix, designed by Mecanoo architecten, was awarded with the prestigious 2007 Brick Award for best international project. The award is organized yearly by the Brick Development Association in the U.K. and Building magazine. The jury chose the Marnix from hundreds of submittals and praised the way brick and glass was used in the project and the clarity of its expression.

Swimming Pool and Sports Centre het Marnix opened in 2006. Transparency - insight, prospect and overview - is the central theme of the design. From the elevated central hall you can survey the whole building at a single glance. Large glazed frontages offer views of the semi-sunken competition pool and multi-purpose pool and the sports hall and fitness/aerobics space above. While swimming lengths in the competition pool one has a fantastic view over the Singel canal, just above the level of the water. The expression of the building is utilitarian, functional, clear and robust through the use of the red/orange masonry along side glass and aluminium.
