This is Southern Germany’s biggest urban infrastructure project and the first part of the greater “Stuttgart 21` program which foresees a new inner city development over the buried tracks. A minimalistic concrete shell construction that spans the platforms will connect the inner city with the historic Schlossgarten Park. Altogether 28 eyelets will bring daylight and natural ventilation into the station. No energy is required for heating, cooling and lighting, therefore the station is a zero energy building. The project was awarded the Europe Holcim Award Silver 2005 and the Global Holcim Award Gold 2006, the highest endowed architectural awards, for its sustainable construction. Ecology, Economy and Technology are as much integral aspects of the new railway station as comfort and safety. The structure has a minimal depth; the surface area and the structural mass are also drastically reduced. Through intelligent use of natural energy and resources, no CO2 will be emitted. The structure and the eyelet-cones of the passenger hall connects the level of the platforms with the Plaza and Park above. Long view corridors and the elegance of the structure give the station its unique identity. The shape of the modular shells is based on a reversed „hanging load-model“. The three-dimensional „Light eyes“ are the main feature of the structural design. Like a reversed „hanging load model“ the forces are lead from the edges to the centre of the “eyes` and along their perimeter downwards to the foot of the columns. The perimeter is stiffened by means of a continuous, three-dimensional shell. The continuous shape of these concrete shell creates a high-performance structure. The Construction depth was reduced to a one-hundredth of the span. Openings in the glass-clad parts of the „light eyes“ allow natural ventilation of the platforms and smoke exhaustion in the case of fire. The glazing of the „light eyes“ rests on a double-curve steel cable construction. A ring-shaped steel frame sits flush with the edge. The even spreading of the 28 „light eyes“ allows consistent natural lighting of the hall. The existing station, called the „Bonatz-Building“ and the new station will become the core for the great urban development project of „Stuttgart 21“ and will act as a connector between the new city and the old. The Schlossgarten Park remains the „green heart“ of Stuttgart, because the new station design gives more of it back to the city. The historic Bonatz-Building will be turned into a loggia with a tower as its main sight.
