Maggie's GlasgowEdit profile
The Maggies organisation with the support of historical funding bodies went to considerable efforts to restore the pitted face of this charming University gatehouse. In historical terms the building was not considered worthy of a high listing but looking from the contextual point of view this little pavilion played an inordinately important role in relationship to its scale as the gateway to the more substantial precinct of Kelvingrove Park, the Art Galleries, the University and Park Circus. Like one of the peripheral characters in a grand master painting, it was a minor but important contributor to the greater monumental set piece. Its transformation was achieved by arranging the accommodation on a spiralling series of floor plates extending into the roof space. This is turn frames a sequence of intimate and expansive views back to the landscape it introduced.
