Little India Mrt Station

For Little India Mass Rapid Transit Station, the design theme is based on, the Sari, a timeless cultural icon, to become a fashion statement and an inspiration. The flowing form becomes the entry piece to the station and the language for its interior. The form is organic, fluid and sinuous, giving a fresh identity to Little India Station, whilst still firmly rooting it in its context among the Indian heritage section of Singapore. The design theme is sympathetic to the geological history of the area, where a natural stream used to run at the current location of the canal. Little India’s flowing fabric theme is consistent with flowing water forms of the past. The structural design integrates with complex new and existing infrastructure, linking the current design into an existing MRT Station, a relocated canal and a new underground highway. In the midst of complex geometries and interconnections, the passenger flows are kept as intuitive and direct as possible. The station layouts were developed to minimize the distances travelled by passengers, with a clear spatial hierarchy and the generous public spaces, to reduce congestion and bring a dynamic design aesthetic to otherwise pragmatic spaces. The large double height space at the platform heightens the sense of arrival, while at the same time integrates the platform and concourse level, giving a sense of security and comfort by allowing you visual connections between the different levels. Glass and metallic mosaics are inserted into the granite flooring, bringing a sparkle and glamour, similar to the glitter in a Sari design.
