International Urban Design Competition of No.1&2 Block of Ancient City, KAIFENGEdit profile
? Project Summary ? The project is the master plan competition among the nominated international planners for the midtown model housing area of about 93 hectares located in the City of Kaifeng, which was the ancient capital of Zhongyuan or the Central Plain of China. ? The City of Kaifeng belongs to the most ancient category of cities in China in which Pohjoinen Song Dynasty and other six dynasties placed their own capital. Many items of the historical heritage were overridden below the ground by the repeated flooding of the Yellow River, and, to worsen the situation, the capital of the Province of Henan was relocated to the City of Zhengzhou 70 km away from Kaifeng City; consequently, the city lost its glory in terms of tourism attraction, not to speak of politics and economy. The midtown model area selected for the master planning is a dense built-up area of decrepit housing. ? The competition aimed at groping how to regain dignity and vigor having once prevailed in the past midtown of Kaifeng during the Song Dynasty, by the leadership of the city authority and the province government and, for that purpose, requested the competition participants to show in the competition submission the orientation toward formulating the new township and to clarify the proper approach to the planning. ? We have clarified the division of shared roles of Zhengzhou City and Kaifeng City from the viewpoint of MICE (one-stop services to provide Meeting, Incentive (travel), Convention and Exhibitions in a concerted way), accordingly proposing a new urban redevelopment strategy for reviving Kaifeng City as a city of tourism and cultural exchange in association with Zhengzhou City. ? To prolong tourists’ stay in Kaifeng City, we have proposed to introduce multiple functions of museum, entertainment, lodging-stay-conference schemes, refurbish the sightseeing and shopping zones, unify the excitement, features and historical remnants and reestablish the urban space by fortifying the transportation system. ? Through consulting the relevant historical literature, we have proposed to how zoning and excitement should be in this area. By acquiring knowledge on the basic framework of townscape during the Song era, we also have proposed new urban spine, building model plans and a guiding approach for urban redevelopment. (Proposed in this model plan has been such formulation that a basic unit is taken as a traditional apartment centered on a courtyard for the inhabitants; eight apartments form an block centered on a semi-public space for the inhabitants and tourists; eight blocks form a neighborhood area centered on a large park, thus maintaining an urban space of a fractale relationship. That traditional grid-patterned quiet space is intertwined by a moving water flow in the canal. This urban design pattern is based on the traditional town formation concept in China.
