A twisting snake with a wooden skin forms a new square and market hall in Inca, Majorca.
Aerially resembling a multi-dimensional sign, the Inca Public Market seems to rise from the ground as a direct extension of the square.
‘The proposal tried to obtain the maximum possible amount of public space,’ explains Charmaine Lay of Soto-Lay Architects, ‘while accommodating the different requirements of a varied program: car park, supermarket, retail shops, council offices and public market.’
A continuous strip rises from the ground, accommodating the entrance to the supermarket and the garage underground. It further rises to form a shelter for market and shops on the street-level, reaching its maximum height with the council offices.
