House Baetens
The intersection of a planned green strip and an existing avenue provide an architectural opportunity for this a two-storey dwelling. The first floor appears to be cumbersome and heavily materialised acting as a plinth: dark bricks with continuous seams result in an abstract rugged character. In complete contrast, the second floor is a wooden shaft: lighter in colour, weight and design. The different character of the two entities is even further reinforced by the usage of a horizontal daylight strip element that creates a feeling that the timber top floor is floating above the masonry base.
