Honda Big Wing
Honda Big Wing is Vaslab’s competition winning project awarded in September 2007. The construction starts in March 2008 and is completed mid-year of 2009. AP Honda, the client, aimed this project to be the first big-bike center in Asia. It is to reinforce the brand image and is to be the new destination for a community nearby. It also intends to draw bike-lovers, young generation people, and general visitors, etc. Vaslab’s proposal design had Honda’s attention by its metaphorical design that articulate Honda’s brand marketing mind of “attitude of winning`. The site is located at Praditmanutham Road, below and in parallel with the new Bangkok’s highway Ardnarong-Raminthra. This new Bangkok vessel brings in many low-rise commercial projects. Many are new magnets for recreation and leisure. The fast traffic speed became the force fluctuated in and out the site to create the project’s zoning formation. The sculptural mark of two overtaking concrete forms is inspired from “hugging the curve` transition; the winning moment of racing motorcycles in racing track. The interpretation is made clear by the two curved forms engaged one another in plans and sections. The first curve vectors its circulation from café and main entry through showroom, retails, education zone, and warehouse. The other curve directs its path from lounge and conference via offices, canteen, service center and workshop. Whereas the triangle site’s open space hugged by these two concrete boomerangs becomes riding track for the building’s users. Responded to the client’s request, the use of concrete as eco-friendly material is applied throughout the project. Its masculine finishes flows outside-in as seen from continuous surface of exterior and interior’s wall and ceiling. The fluid interior circulation is designed to follow the same dynamic characteristic of its outer shell. The two overtaking/ interlocking forms of its architecture are the key monumental reminiscence to Honda’s attitude of winning. Not only the design is functional, but the meaning of its corporate identity is to be remembered. The integration of design solutions; mass-form & space study, area requirements, program arrangements, fluid circulation, building codes and Honda’s corporate identity are fitted in this site context.
