Hiroshi Senju Museum Annex
In the Japanese resort town of Karuizawa, a museum’s shop, restaurant and offices appear have landed in a spaceship-like structure.

The ‘annex,’ as it’s called, is located next to the Hiroshi Senju Museum and houses its secondary facilities. Its architect Yasui Hideo says he wanted to harmonize traditional Japanese elements with a sense of modernity to create a unique result.

‘My inspiration came from origami, the Japanese paper folding technique, which I united with the nature found in the surrounding Yatsugatake mountains near Nagano,’ Hideo explains. ‘Developing origami into real architecture was a big challenge. First, I created origami structures from paper, then developed the structure to a real architectural one by playing with different triangular parts.’

The museum next door exhibits works by Japanese artist Hiroshi Senju; its architecture is largely curving, so the juxtaposed annex makes a stark contrast.
