Architect Ken Yokogawa has used an acute geometric exterior to create a robust spatial narrative which houses Japanese rituals.
A buried ground floor includes the bedrooms and living space overlooking a private ornamental garden. Both the furniture and structure have been designed to develop and reinforce the polyhedron concept in the compact house.
The upper floor feels the full force of the polyhedral aluminium exterior. A multi-faceted angular roof allows natural light to reflect into the study and tea room. Interchanges between interior and exterior spaces are exposed through large windows that circulate the perimeter.
Beyond a green slate wall, Yokogawa created symbolic and spatial meaning in the tea room. Before entering, a water basin prompts the cleansing of hands and mouths. After removing their shoes, visitors enter the space through a small hatch, or nijiriguchi. Crouching to enter, guests are encouraged to disconnect from the rest of the house and succumb to the half-lit, dark retreat.
