Heart Center in Cologne
Heart Center in Cologne Since Antiquity the heart has been considered the home of the soul. With this in mind, this project was, for us as architects, a matter of the heart, body and soul. This led us to design a structure that incorporates therapeutic reason and medical technology with physical receptivity and a sentient disposition. The Heart Center, equipped with state of the art medical technology, receives its patients and visitors with a 20-meter high, glassed entrance. The structure-high reception hall is flooded with light and is more reminiscent of a hotel than of a clinic. Deciduous trees and warm materials, such as cherry wood, provide a pleasant atmosphere in which to linger. The color-based design of the individual wards makes them bright and inviting. Intimate rooms that provide places of retreat, as well as rooms in which to visit with family and friends, also help to promote patient recovery. In the children’s clinic on the 2nd floor parent rooms and play areas are connected to an outside playground via pergolas covered in plants. The facade of the Heart Center is covered with light-colored shell-limestone facing and is ordered by means of reddish, shimmering aluminum shading devices. All these elements give the building the unmistakable appearance. Special fields: Heart-thorax surgery, cardiology, pediatric cardiology, vascular surgery Facilities: 4 heart operating rooms, one of which is a Hybrid OR equipped with X-ray equipment 3 cardiac catheter – measuring stations 1 bronchoscopy Function diagnosis 24 beds in intensive care 24 beds in intermediate care 12 beds in pediatric cardiology 4 wards 128 beds for normal care
