Harris City Academy
This 1,360-pupil school, near Croydon, specialises in teaching business and enterprise in a 10,000sqm main building, with a sports hall. The pragmatism of Harris Academy’s architecture and programming has been balanced by careful attention to key architectural details that enliven the atmosphere of this large-scale school environment. High levels of natural light reach the deep-plan interior through atria volumes. The concrete detailing, as part of a clean and robust utilitarian aesthetic, is of exceptional quality and contributes to the building’s passive energy strategy through thermal mass. ETFE skylight panels and external Siberian larch timber cladding further enrich the materiality of the building. The project included the refurbishment of the original Grade II-listed school on the site for th sixth form, and is set within a unifying hard and soft landscape scheme with MUGA sports pitches.
