*h/2 tower - commercial/office complex Competition awards: • 2009, public, anonymous, architectural concept competition, Croatia, • 2009, 20+10+X –on-line architecture award of World Architecture Community The h/2 tower shape is a product of “rigid` urbanistic conditions in combination with defined competition project programme which demands from architects to reach the highest level of total floor area. *h/2 is urban rule which represents minimal building distance from the boundary line towards a neighbour building plot... (h = building height) The starting point in creating the building was to analyse the possibilities of the narrow and irregular shaped plot, find a “hole` in urban regulations enabling us to meet the programme requirements. We added a public access road on the north-eastern plot boundary (only possible position), by which we locally eliminated the h/2 rule. The result was the creation of an irregular crystal shaped volume (initial volume) within which all competition programme facilities should fit in. Maximal surface which was possible to achieve within the initial volume envelope was actually larger than maximal allowed by urban regulations and the programme – therefore the difference between these two elements was the only manipulative space for design intervention which would fully respond to the programme (achieved by “volume cutting`). The complex is composed of three segments which create a coherent composition and clearly visible differentiation between the initial volume and later volume cutting. Façade is created by volume cutting of the initial volume which is covered with a peel of mesh. Beneath the peel, the core of the volume is a ventilated glass facade. Even though first prize not won, the nearby neighbour was impressed by our design and now engaged us to build the h/2 tower on his plot.
