Guys Tower External Refurbishment
After more than three decades of intensive service, The Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust have decided that the 34 storey Guy’s Tower is itself in need of some essential surgery to ensure that the façade is fit for the next 30 years, to reduce the building’s overall energy consumption and to transform and restore this iconic building into an elegant and captivating ambassador for the Trust. A feasibility study has been drawn up by Penoyre & Prasad and Arup, and presents a number of options including partial and total recladding of the tower, the opportunity to showcase public health within the city, improving the building envelope and creating a new linking building, or ‘wafer’ between the two existing towers to provide additional accommodation. The report addresses the public realm with improved wayfinding; the creation of new civic spaces at ground level, and integrated art projects which will celebrate views of, and out of, the tower itself and make a poignant contribution to the rapidly changing London Bridge skyline.
