Goat Island Marine Laboratory

The University of Auckland’s South Pacific Marine Science Institute is a research facility located on the site of New Zealand’s oldest Marine Reserve at Goat Island, Leigh.

The masterplan creates a world class marine research facility maximising the potential of the unique site and provides flexible spaces to accommodate changing needs and technology. The campus is organised into 3 primary areas:a public access zone including a marine science Interpretive Centre, a university research zone housing laboratories and research space, and an intermediate zone which provides controlled public access to conference and teaching facilities.

The three zones are organised along a central circulation path ensuring connectivity between buildings and allowing visual connections from student and staff office spaces to the laboratories and  the outstanding marine reserve below.
