Faculty of Education campus Nijmegen

Faculty of Education campus Nijmegen
This design defines a new standard in sustainable buildings for education, with a Greencalc score estimated at 700 points (roughly comparable to BREEAM outstanding). The building fits well in its surroundings, bridging the scale gap between the villa’s to the north and the large education and research buildings to the south and west. the building is the final element in an ensemble that has been built over the past 10 years, together forming the Nijmegen Campus of the University of Applied Sciences of Arnhem and Nijmegen. The result is a welcoming and iconic building, comfortably placed in a spacious green environment. The 530 parking places and similarly capacitated bicycle storage have been placed underground. The sustainable measures form an integral part of the architectural design and are clearly visible: the energy producing south facade, where thousands of pv cells are oriented towards the sun. The energy saving north facadecovered with a water retaining and self renewing living outer skin. Thanks to the PV cells and a Bio Mass installation, the building is fully CO2 neutral, fossil fuel is not needed anymore. For us the essential qualities of the building are a comfortable environment for its many users in an attractive atmosphere. That is why we have given special attention to the interior climate. The education spaces are mostly north oriented, around an atrium enriched with plants and water. This space is the drawing room for the whole community of the Faculty, from where all corners of the building can be quickly reached. This too is a form of sustainability.
