Architect's statement:
The Encants market is thought as a place for people… an open place. Our first approach was to ensure that all sides of the market are immediately reachable and permeable. Half of the market takes place in the interstice of space in between the roof and the ground/parking. The other half is compressed inside the roof 7 meters thickness. It’s a ramping space taking the visitors from the ground level to the very top of the structure… gently meandering upwards. The market can be visited in the same way as the F.L.Wright Guggenheim museum in New York City: starting at the top and meandering downwards all the way to the large hall under the roof.

In the growing neighbourhood of Poble Nou the issue of urban identity has been handled by the creation of a few key iconic buildings, of which the Agbar tower stands as the focal point. The presence of the tower attracts tourists and locals but is in fact a much more urban gesture then an active building on the level of the pedestrian. We propose to use the market as a place of urban activation for passers-by.
