East Malvern is located between Sylvester Crescent and the Monash Freeway, with station access from Sylvester Crescent.
The station consists of two side platforms; Platform 1 has a large brick building housing an enclosed waiting area, ticket facilities and toilets, while platform 2 has a smaller brick building. A large Metcard ticket vending machine is located inside the waiting area, which is able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins, with additional coin-only Metcard ticket vending machines situated in the waiting area and at the entrance to platform 2. Myki ticket vending machines are located inside the waiting room on platform 1, and at the entrance to platform 2. A footbridge is situated at the Glen Waverley end of the station, which was replaced in 2009 to suit the widening of the M1 tollway.
East Malvern station opened on 3 February 1929 as Eastmalvern, and was renamed East Malvern in 1972. The railway line between East Malvern and Glen Waverley was opened on 5 May 1930. It was upgraded to a Premium Station on 21 August 1995.
During part of the 1950s and 1960s there was a small extra platform at the down end of platform 1, making a 1/3 of platform 1 an island platform. 1-3 car trains could fit on the platform, but usually a single car Tait (Doggie) would run an East Malvern to Glen Waverley shuttle, with most trains at weekends, nights etc. terminating at East Malvern, and every second or third train from the city would have a connection to Glen Waverley.
