Dover Heights Residence
Dover Heights in Sydney is an area of contrasting architectural styles, a mix of urban villas sharing panoramic city and ocean views. The clients, a keen young family, sought to create their dream home by renovating the old house. The brief required extensive alterations to the existing dwelling and so an alternate scheme was presented with a realistic costing. With only a marginal price over renovation, the architectural benefits of a new building convinced the clients to knock it down and start fresh. The design focus was to create a seamless relationship between the interior and exterior living spaces while creating privacy for the owners, otherwise surrounded by many large houses. With two active sons, the scheme opens the interior living spaces out to the rear yard and pool, an essential aspect of the new design. The house transforms itself flawlessly from large social occasions to intimate family gatherings as concealed sliding doors transform open living spaces to private tranquil zones. Sculptured concrete elements such as benches and seats are used to define activity zones within the open plan living areas. The orientation of the design layout promotes natural ventilation, and a large window over the entry draws northern light into the interior, casting changing light and shadows throughout the day. In contrast to the cool contemporary nature of the design, a layering of warm and natural materials creates a home rich in texture and visual stimulation. The owners describe their home as an, “urban oasis, a retreat of peace and tranquillity, a sheer delight and privilege to live in`.
