Cobweb BridgeEdit profile
The Cobweb Bridge, also known as Spider Bridge, is located in the city centre of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, near the disused Sheffield Victoria railway station. It was completed in 2002. Its design was the solution to a difficult problem - how to pass the riverside cycle-walkway ( Five Weirs Walk) under the massive Wicker Arches viaduct and at the same time link one bank of the River Don to the other. Without the bridge, the footpath would have had to make a one mile detour. Designed by Sheffield City Council's Structures Section, the entire 100 metres long bridge is suspended on a web of steel cables secured to the underside of the Viaduct, hence the name. The theme is completed by large steel spiders concealing the lighting on the ceiling. The bridge is prone to vandalism, the wires forming the parapet have been stolen more than once.
