Central City Shopping Centre
Central City Shopping Centre (formerly known as Surrey Place Mall) is a shopping mall and office tower complex in Whalley, Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, which is owned by Blackwood Partners Management Corporation. It is near Surrey Central Station of the SkyTrain system in the Whalley neighbourhood. It was designed by Bing Thom Architects. It is the second largest mall in Surrey, smaller than Guildford Town Centre and larger than Semiahmoo Shopping Centre. The mall was cosntructed in the 1960s and it became Surrey's first enclosed shopping mall. The mall signaled the growing predominance of that district as Surrey's predominant shopping area. The construction of the Port Mann Bridge and Guildford Town Centre began to challenge the mall's position as a dominant shopping centre. By the 1990s the downfall became great and the mall had loss a lot of its foot traffic and stores became unrented. In 2000 the shopping centre went through major renovations and was upgraded by 2003 adjoinng Simon Fraser University (known as SFU Surrey) Campus and a office tower. Notable retailers include Best Buy, Shoppers Drug Mart, T & T Supermarket, Zellers, Future Shop, The Brick, Bed Bath & Beyond, Winners and Tim Hortons. It is home to educational institutions, including, Stenberg College, Universal Learning Institute, Vancouver Career College and Westwood College. Its office tower at 112 m (367 ft) is the tallest building in Surrey. The Shopping Centre itself is 57,400 m 2 (617,500 sq ft) while the tower and podium rakes in an additional 52,900 m 2 (569,800 sq ft). Public transit buses in Surrey, operated by TransLink, stop across from the Shopping Centre, at Surrey Central Station, connecting with routes to the following Surrey neighborhoods: Fleetwood, Guildford, Newton and Cloverdale.
