Calgary Courts Center

Calgary Courts Centre 2008 World Architecture Festival Awards The Calgary Courts Centre (CCC), located in the heart of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is one of the largest and most unique courthouses in North America. This centre of justice was designed to address the users and the context by focusing on four core concepts: transparency, sustainability, circulation, and flexibility. The $300 million dollar, one million square foot facility, features two glass and concrete towers, connected by a 26 - storey atrium (one of the largest in North America), outfitted with elevator lobbies and public gathering spaces at all levels. The elevator lobbies also act as walkways that join the two towers through the atrium. In planning for the project, a public/private partnership, the Government of Alberta called for a "dignified contemporary facility, accessible to all that stands in the community as the embodiment of democratic rights, individual freedoms and justice." The architecture and design of the CCC was inspired by those ideals. From the choice of construction materials, to the concept of a glass atrium at its heart, the form of the design grew from a seamless interconnection with the important function the courts fulfill. To gain deep insight into that function, and to explore how aspects of it could inform final design, the design team collaborated with a number of groups during project planning. These knowledge-sharing sessions with judges, court administrators and construction consultants played a huge part in ensuring the project lived up to the ideals set out at the beginning of the project. The facility is unique both in that its 73 courtrooms are the most courtrooms of any courthouse in the nation, and that it is home to both the Provincial Court of Alberta and the Court of Queen's Bench (federal). A multi-purpose room has also been custom designed for use as an Aboriginal courtroom. The design of the CCC represents a timeless architectural expression of layered materials and a pleasing balance of transparent and solid elements. These high performance materials of triple glazed green tinted glass, brushed stainless steel, cherry wood paneling and stone flooring, have been selected for their complementary and enduring qualities. The architectural vocabulary of the new buildings is intended to complement and contrast the sandstone of the historic Court of Appeal nearby, creating a juxtaposition to emphasize the historic building’s presence in the composition. Meanwhile, the east-west orientation is intended to align and order the geometry of the buildings while maximizing environmental and site opportunities. The design of the CCC strikes a careful balance between a complex that grows naturally out of the surrounding context and respecting the “sense of place
