1. The Landmark

The proposal for the Opera House aims not just to provide a new image for Busan, but to provide this image with a specific notion of the future. A future that is not disconnected from the present, but strives to reinforce relations with the cultural heritage and specificity of the local context. The Opera House aims to provide an example of a future that allows a harmonic balance between  our lives as individual global citizens and our lives as members of a local community.

Engaged in its role as a refined global landmark, the new Busan Opera House stands out within its context as a recognizable sign that creates a contemporary experience, while simultaneously invoking the possibility for a degree of recognition and a sense of familiarity.
At night, the building appears as a big lantern captured by Busan’s coastline, reminiscent of a dragon that moves his body swiftly through the air. This dynamic appearance is achieved with a multi-scaled building skin, an effect that is further reinforced by the embracing movement of the building’s volume. While generating an image that is constantly in flux from further away, the same form provides a protective experience for people standing in close vicinity.

The dynamic effect of subtly changing forms and reflections generate a continuously varying experience of the building, which changes not only according to the position of the visitor, but also according to the changing sunlight during the day and the different seasons, providing infinite variations in the reflections of the daylight.

The building is not only envisioned as a global landmark, but is conceived to play an important role and point of reference for the citizens of Busan as well;

To achieve this, the new Busan Opera House is thus conceived as a double-scaled landmark: While the image and shape of the Opera House will stand out as a symbol for the global cultural community, the building will simultaneously create a new destination for the community of Busan; a place with a special intimacy that will respond and satisfy a wide variety of needs and desires, both culturally and emotionally.

The building aims to occupy a primary role within the public life of Busan by creating an articulated sequence of public spaces:
Arriving from the city across the pedestrian bridge, the building first welcomes the public in a big open plaza, a new civic square for the city that is conceived as public leisure space - to later become an integral part of the planned culture park. It will be a place where people can gather and meet or find a private moment on a bench under the shadow of the trees; a place where there is no pre-programmed or entertaining function other then the presence of people themselves.

Passing through the so-called Gateway, the sequence ends at the seashore, where a new pedestrian deck is conceived for outdoor activities as well as performances; a water friendly space where the children can play and experience the proximity and the beauty of the sea.

2. The Gateway

The Opera House is a multi-dimensional Gateway:
On a global scale the building acts as a Gateway connecting the Pacific Ocean and the Eurasian continent, while on a local scale the building forms a new physical Gateway between the city of Busan and the bay area.

Together, these two dimensions assign to the Opera House the symbolic role of being a Gateway to the future of the Busan.  

The building itself acts as a real Gateway between the cultural dimension and the physical dimension of Busan:
As an open and exterior space, placed between the city and the seaside, and also between the two main volumes of the complex, the Gateway is a big open-air foyer where is possible to access all the main functions of the building: the Opera House and the Theatre, the ground floor Shopping Center and most importantly, the 'Core' circulation space of the complex.

 

3. The Core

The Core is an open, continuous and variable space which connects all the public and private program of the complex, across the entire building.

The Core is designed as a venue for artists and performers to display their craft freely, a space that can change role and be easily adapted to display different events during the day and night: fashion shows, performances, open air lectures, events; anything can happen in the Core.
This sloping space, with steps that can be used as seating, plays the same role of the optional smaller theatre of 300 seats, while creating a greater potential and vitality for the entire building by being exposed and integrated with it. This space exhibits the power of communication and creates a direct connection to the public for artists, actors and performers....; the Core is the stage of the public community.

The Core includes the two main foyers and connects all the functions within the building. Starting at ground level, where the foyer of the Opera House is located, it connects to the foyer of the Theatre at the second floor, including along its path the exhibition spaces, the café with its viewpoint and the panoramic restaurant.
Through a spectacular sequence of footbridges the Core finally arrives at the roof of the building, where a large open air space is used as a public theatre and event plaza, a terrace open to the sea and exposed to the infinite view of the horizon.

4. The Machines

The Opera House and the Multi Purpose Theatre; ‘the Machines’, are the two most important elements within the complex, each one with its own entrance and its own technical and auxiliary spaces.

The Opera House, which houses 2.000 seats, is designed to accommodate world-class productions, therefore its facilities are designed with an uncompromising layout.
Around and behind the main stage and side stages - directly accessible from the side street – are located the various supporting facilities on six different floor levels; the back stage and spaces for the performers and artists are located on the ground floor; the larger rehearsal spaces – for dancers, singers, orchestras, etc. are located on the 3th and 4th floors; the dressing rooms, spaces for technical support and office spaces as well as spaces dedicated to theatre engineering are located on the remaining upper floors.

The Multi Purpose Theatre, with its 1.300 seats, has been designed as a regular rectangular volume, which gives the space the flexibility to be used with a variety of layouts, by using a system of moveable seating.
The Multi Purpose Theatre, like all the other functions of the building, is accessible from the Core, but also has its own direct access from the Gateway. Its technical and auxiliary facilities are located behind and around the stage on three different levels.

A third element within of the complex - albeit with a minor impact as the previous two - is the Convention and Banquet space, which is located on the upper floor of the Opera House around and behind the stage tower. Through an independent entrance and direct vertical connections, the Convention and Banquet space can be used autonomously from the main functions, allowing for a flexible use of the entire complex that can also sustain overlapping time schedules.

All the other auxiliary facilities – the specialized shopping centre, the panoramic restaurant, the café with its viewpoint, the exhibition spaces and the outdoor theatre - are part of the Core systems of spaces previously described.
