Henning Larsen Architects won 1st Prize in invited competition for the new Batumi Aquarium in Georgia. The design combines educational, commercial, and recreational functions. Its simple aesthetic and innovative spatial arrangement designate the aquarium a bold architectural and educational icon of Batumi.
Programmatic elements are divided into four distinct hubs, or stones, organized around a central public zone. The four stones of the aquarium constitute four exhibition areas representing unique local marine biotypes: Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea / Red Sea, Aegean Sea, and Indian Ocean. All exhibitions are connected to a central multipurpose space comprising a café, auditorium, and retail amenities– all providing views of the Black Sea and Batumi Beach.
The educational intention of Batumi Aquarium is triangulated in a spatial ar-rangement: listening (auditorium), experiencing (witnessing, learning, absorbing), and experimenting (workshops). Spaces are juxtaposed in a configuration that promotes a stimulating, interactive environment.
The design of Batumi Aquarium is extracted directly from the pebbles of Batumi Beach. The ingrained, nostalgic notion of the Black Sea has shaped the shoreline of the Republic of Georgia and has perpetually nurtured a rich marine life. The Batumi Aquarium will embody an iconic rock formation visible from both land and sea.
The Batumi Aquarium’s stone volumes will comprise self-supporting shell structures built with waterproof reinforced concrete. Henning Larsen Architects is testing two primary methods for construction: 1. In-situ cast concrete with traditional plywood formwork 2. Concrete applied to curved reinforcement mesh supported by scaffolding and space frames during construction.
HLA’s design team for the Batumi Aquarium includes Louis Becker (Design Director and Partner), Anders Park (Project Manager), and Viggo Haremst (Lead Designer).
